Dublin City University was created in 1975 as the National Institute of Higher Education, enrolling its first students in 1980. In 1989 it became a university by statute and adopted its current name, and in 2016 it incorporated four other institutions in Dublin. Today it has more than 18,000 students, and more than 20% are international students. It has been ranked in the top 4% of universities worldwide and is the only University on the island of Ireland to be featured in the QS Top 50 under 50. Dublin City University has also been placed 86th among the top one hundred young universities in the Times Higher Education 100 under 50.
