About the University

The University of Central Lancashire is one of the top 20 biggest universities in the UK. Based in Preston, it dates back to the wonderfully-named Institution for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded in 1828. It grew to become the Harris Art College in the 20th Century before becoming a polytechnic and finally gaining university status in 1992. Almost 25,000 students come to UCLan every year and it has campuses in Burnley, Cumbria and Cyprus. 5,500 of those students are international students from more than 120 countries around the world. University College Dublin is one of Europe’s leading research-intensive universities. UCD have the most diverse student facilities of any university in Ireland, with many facilities designed to encourage students to become involved in clubs and societies and stay fit and healthy. The Student Centre and the UCD Sport and Fitness complex are the hubs of student life on campus. There are also multiple opportunities for students to get involved in exciting initiatives related to their specific disciplines. Student Centre facilities include a state-of-the-art 3D cinema, drama theatre, debating chamber, 600-seat auditorium, meeting rooms for student clubs and societies, TV studio, radio pod, seminar room, medical centre, pharmacy, barber, newsagent, The UCD Clubhouse (bar and function room), cafés, shops, and social spaces. Sports facilities include a 50-metre swimming pool, gym, dance and spinning studios, sauna and jacuzzi, three multi-purpose sports halls, four squash courts, handball/racquetball alley, climbing wall, changing facilities, performance and squad gyms, 17 natural grass pitches, six synthetic 5-a-side pitches, sand-based hockey pitch, synthetic rugby, GAA and soccer pitches, and the National Hockey Stadium. Student gym membership entitles current UCD students to free access to UCD Sport & Fitness Gym and the performance gym.

Student life

UCD is home to more than 60 student societies catering to arts, music, sport, and religious groups, including a club for Indian students. UCD has an Applied Language Centre offering courses in several modern European and Asian languages besides courses in English as a foreign and second language. Other services and facilities include a vast library, I.T workshops, an international swimming pool, a rugby club (Leinster Rugby), and an institute for sports and fitness. Campuses at UCD also provide multiple eating options at its many cafes and restaurants, most of which are open from Monday to Friday.

University College Cork was founded in 1845 as one of three Queen’s Colleges across Ireland - the other two were in Belfast and Galway. In 1908 it became University College, Cork before losing the comma 90 years later. Today it hosts around 20,000 students with more than 3,000 of them international students from over 104 countries. Trinity College Dublin was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I as the first college of the University of Dublin. It was intended to be a collegiate university like the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but Trinity College was the only college created and so the University of Dublin is its degree-awarding body and the two names are usually interchangeable. Dublin City University was created in 1975 as the National Institute of Higher Education, enrolling its first students in 1980. In 1989 it became a university by statute and adopted its current name, and in 2016 it incorporated four other institutions in Dublin.
